About Our Team
Who are we?
Nik Hawks is the "ideas man" and a fount of enthusiasm for the concept. Having worked in and enjoyed both green building and high-threat security environments, Nik's experience crosses the little traveled chasm between bleeding-heart liberal and guns 'n ammo conservative.
Bernd Haferkamp is our "half-way man", bridging the gap between George's cold hard reality checks and Nik's unbridled excitement. An experienced ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) builder and general contractor, Bernd answers the "nuts and bolts" questions.
George Eastom, a licensed P.E. in California, has designed and built hundreds of buildings throughout the U.S. Grounded in solid experience, George keeps Exup from being too, well, exuberant.
What do we believe in?
The Exup concept of building green in high-threat, hostile, and post-disaster environments is dedicated to three goals. First, to be a profitable business. Second, to making sure that the techniques and technologies we use have a net positive impact on the environment at large and the ecosystem in which they are built. Third, Exup is dedicated to making the world a safer, healthier place for its human occupants.
Our goal with each project is to "tunnel through the cost barrier" using techniques outlined in "Natural Capitalism" by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins, and L. Hunter Lovins. By creating buildings that function as parts of a greater whole, each Exup design charette is able to wring out maximum efficiency gains that add up to substantial environmental and economic cost savings.
What is our view of the future?
Without question, this is the way all buildings will be built within the next ten years. By moving effectively and decisively, we hope to be in the vanguard of green building in the "wild" environments. With more natural disasters hitting and more strife and conflict breaking out as societies begin to fight over the "need to have's" (i.e. water and food) instead of the "nice to have's" like oil, Exup anticipates not only booming business but also a chance to create a hugely positive impact throughout the world through building green.
