Water Management
Overview
Managing available water is critical to every Exup building project. From security risks in high-threat environments to health risks in post-disaster areas, managing available water is an integral part of every Exup building design. Water catchments on the roof, water efficiency in the house, greywater distribution systems; all can contribute to a solid water management plan that calls on H.I.D.E.S. principles.

Where does our water come from?
In some cases the municipal water supply is a building’s water source, while in others it may be a well or surface water. High-threat areas that have no surface water and difficult to access ground water may rely on rainwater supplemented by trucked-in water, a source of concern in security-dominated environments.
What are the components of a water management plan?
A water management plan includes the source of the water, how the water is distributed, whether by truck, by pipe, or by bucketful, and how the water is used. Drinking, personal hygiene, and plant production can all be incorporated into Exup designs, and can all be part of the same system.
What are the benefits of a water management plan?
Careful work in water management design can lead to large economic and environmental payoffs. In high-threat areas, increasing the water efficiency lowers the need for water, which decreases the threat to security posed by constant water delivery.
In post-disaster areas, identifying and protecting water sources and distribution early in disaster management can mean the difference between debilitating disease and dynamic deal-making. Contaminated water can make or break an economic recovery; imagine if New Orleans had no potable water problems!
