Reverse Osmosis

What is it?

Reverse osmosis uses water pressure to force water molecules through a membrane so fine that it blocks salt, most viruses, and parasites. An excellent option in areas that have high levels of dissolved organic compounds, reverse osmosis is a purification technique that is best paired with a filter that addresses organic compounds.

Why does Exup use it?

Reverse osmosis produce some of the purest "one step" water on the planet, rivaling distillation in quality. On a large scale, RO can also be used to desalinate ocean or brackish water, an excellent, although expensive, option for buildings and communities by the sea.

Why not use them everywhere?

Two words: Cost, and Waste. Reverse osmosis units are expensive, ranging from $200-$2,000 per house. Reverse osmosis units also waste water: water that does not flow through the membrane is used to “wash” the untreated side, which wastes several gallons of water for every gallon of water produced. In “wet” climates this is not such a problem, but in dry climate using reverse osmosis can be disastrous.
